Rebeccaworks Custom Crochet

I love to crochet. Part of the fascination of crocheting for me is taking what amounts to a piece of string and making something from it. I particularly love making things that people can use and enjoy. On the following pages are descriptions of a selection of handbags, baby blankets, and an initial pillow for your consideration. The blanket patterns would work well in larger sizes as afghans.

Since I specialize in custom work, I am happy to consider special requests. Please feel free to contact me if you would like an item not shown here. All work is done on a first-come, first-served basis.

A few thoughts on custom work: I know that people who don't crochet don't really have a way of knowing how long it would take to make something, or the steps involved in doing a design. I thought I'd provide a little of that information.

Handbags, depending on size, take from two to three weeks to complete. The shell-stitch baby blankets usually take about a month to complete. It's a fairly simple pattern to follow, once it gets started. The snowflake motif blankets usually take six weeks to two months. The motifs themselves get crocheted, then sewn together. After that step, an edging gets crocheted around the blanket, to help hold its shape and because it's a nice finishing touch. Afghans in shell-stitch take about two months. Afghans in the snowflake motif take three months.

The filet crochet motifs used on the initial pillows start with graph paper and a pencil. Plenty of patience helps, and the pencil needs a good eraser. Once the design is done, the crocheting of all those blocks and their surrounding spaces (filet crochet is just that: solid blocks and open spaces) takes a while. I usually ask customers to allow a month per pillow.

I also get requests to make items from available patterns, and requests to recreate something someone had that somehow is ruined beyond repair. I'm almost always willing to look at a picture, and if I can get the pattern or am sure I'm not violating copyright in recreating, I'm happy to do the work. In those instances, of course, customers are paying for my labor rather than my design. Please note that I will not do work that violates copyrights.

I rarely am able to accept requests for garments, especially those intended to fit closely.

Another thing you need to know about custom work: it is expensive. All those hours of work will make items cost much more money than something you've bought that isn't custom made, and I think justifiably so. Don't forget that you're paying for knowledge and experience, along with the time and material involved.

All that being said, if you do have an idea you'd like realized in crochet, I'd appreciate it if you'd ask me about it! If you ask for something I can't do, I'll say so, but I promise to be nice about it. And to thank you for asking!
